At Dorel UK’s Borehamwood facilities, forklift trucks scurry around a large warehouse stacking and unstacking pallets of baby car seats and other equipment throughout a typical workday. Because of the height of the stacks, it has not been impossible for forklift drivers to see the highest pallets properly. That is, until recently.

Like other companies in the UK, Dorel opted to mount on-board cameras to be the eyes of the operator when the forks are in a heightened position. The camera is mounted in a way that allows the driver to see exactly what he would see if he were positioned on the forks himself. The image from the camera is transmitted to a small monitor inside the cab.

This seemingly simple system has been a complete game changer in terms of efficiency and safety. As any forklift truck driver knows, as soon as the forks are out of the visible range of the operator, that’s when things become dangerous. Without being able to see at height, drivers are often left to intuition and ‘general feel’. However, one little mistake loading or unloading could be a huge problem. An on-board camera reduces the likelihood of such problems.

Installation of the cameras is yet one more example of how technology is being used to make forklift trucks and their operators safer. Technology is a much-needed addition due to the fact that there is no central authority responsible for regulating operators.

As it currently stands, there is no such thing as a forklift truck license. Each company that owns and operates forklifts is responsible, under the law, for making sure their operators are properly trained in relation to the trucks they will be driving and the cargo they will be handling.

Outside Training

Some companies prefer to handle the training of forklift trucks operators on their own; others like to take advantage of the services offered by the HGV Training Centre. We provide comprehensive forklift driver training in a way that is designed to make sure your drivers can safely handle their vehicles in your warehouse.

We teach operators how to navigate in tight spaces and around co-workers, how to properly load and unload cargo, and how to make sure a fork lift truck is balanced at all times. At the forefront of all we do is safety of operation. As a company or warehouse manager, you owe it to your workers to provide them the best forklift training possible. That’s what we offer.

If you are currently out of work, being trained as a forklift truck driver opens the door to employment opportunities. As we said earlier, there is no such thing as a forklift truck license. Nevertheless, being trained and certified by the HGV Training Centre tells prospective employers that you will not need a lot of remedial training.

Whether you are company owner, warehouse manager, or someone in need of work, we encourage you to get in touch with us today. We can have your training completed faster than you think.
