If you’re wondering how long does your forklift truck licence last, then you’re at the right place. Your forklift truck licence isn’t so much a licence as a certificate of competence, because there’s really no such thing as a forklift truck licence. That said, employers will want to know that you’re competent while operating a forklift, and if you can’t provide up-to-date proof of this, they may need to send you for training just so they know they’ve done their due diligence.

That’s because employers are the ones who can get into trouble for any accidents caused by staff who aren’t properly trained, so you can see how important it is that they know their staff are recent graduates of a training programme approved by RTITB, ITSAAR, ALLMI, NPORS or AITT

The three-year rule

Once you’ve got your certificate for operating a forklift truck, you can generally use this as proof of your abilities for up to three years. Employers as a rule will not accept any certification older than this, which may seem frustrating to you but this is to make sure that the training all their staff have is relatively current.

forklift safety rules

Models of forklifts and regulations – as well as work environments – change all update all the time. That means the training you had 5 years ago may already be out of date and no longer in line with the current law and standard practice of operating a busy warehouse.

How long does it take to renew?

While it might seem quick for a certificate to expire – especially compared with other driving licences – this is to keep you safe as well as other people. But that’s not to say training needs to be long or difficult. If you enroll on one of our forklift truck training courses, you can be qualified within a matter of days, and then you won’t need to think about it again for three years.

When the third year rolls around, simply come back for another shorter Refresher Forklift Training Course and you’re once again good to go for a further three years.

How To Check Your RTITB Certificate?

The training certificate you get will be from the Road Transport Industry Training Board, which is the industry regulator for all safety and competence training for forklift drivers (we also train for

ITSAAR, ALLMI, NPORS or AITT). This is what you’ll need to produce for any current or potential employers, and it’s what you’ll get when you train with us and pass your exam successfully. Your employer will also have a copy of your certificate. You can also visit the RTITB website to check your certificate or for how long it’s valid.

How to get a copy of your forklift licence?

Your forklift licence will have a number that is unique to you. You may be asked for this by current or future employers. Your number will be shown on your licence card and it can also be checked on the  National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) website for authenticity or if lost can be also reapplied for a fresh copy of your licence.

What to do next If You Want to Update your Forklift Truck Licence?
