Cat C1
Vehicles 3500kg to 7500kg With Trailers Up To 750kg+
The initial first step to upgrading your licence for further HGV training. Best suited for ambulances, paramedic trucks, small rigid trucks, box vans drivers. Most professional HGV drivers now progress directly to Category C or C+E rather than taking C1 first.
CAT C / Class 2
Vehicles 3500kg+ with Trailers Up to 750kg
Ideal for delivery lorries, refuse vehicles, refuse trucks, box lorries, skip lorries, fire engines and tippers. Practical training typically takes 4–5 days.
CAT C1+E
Vehicles 3500kg to 7500kg with Trailers 750kg+
Best for specialist transport, horseboxes, livestock trailers and recovery vehicles. It is a stepping stone toward C+E. Practical training typically takes 4-5 days.
CAT C&E / Class 1
Vehicles 7500kg+ with Trailers 750kg+
HGV class 1 training is the highest HGV licence category. Best for articulated lorries, refrigerated transport, long-distance haulage & drawbar combinations. Practical training typically takes 4–5 days. Experienced drivers can earn £45,000–£60,000+ per year depending on role.
