COURSE IN Argyll and Bute

Drivers who live in the western half of Scotland and are looking to obtain a commercial driving licence have that opportunity thanks to the HGV Training Centre. Our HGV training in Argyll and Bute is a high-quality programme offered with the same learning materials, equipment, and commitment to individual students that you would find at any one of our more than four dozen training facilities around the UK. We are proud to serve drivers in Argyll and Bute every day.

HGV training is an important component of becoming a professional driver in that it prepares students to take the four tests necessary to obtain a licence. Our HGV training in Argyll and Bute can prepare you to drive:

  • articulated lorries
  • box trucks
  • tipper trucks
  • bin lorries
  • heavy construction equipment.

Drivers who undergo our HGV programme do so in order to obtain a Category C or Category C+E licence. The former is the most popular of the two while the latter is reserved for the largest and heaviest vehicles on the road. You can ask about both when you contact us to learn more about HGV training in Argyll and Bute.

Why HGV Training Is Necessary

It used to be in days past that formal HGV training was not necessary to obtain a licence. As long as a driver could pass both the theory and practical skills tests, that was enough for licencing authorities. That is no longer the case. All professional drivers must now undergo a minimum 35 hours of CPC training in order to be certified under the new Driver CPC regulations. For that reason alone, at least some training is now mandatory to be a commercial driver.

Driver CPC notwithstanding, HGV training is still an excellent idea if you hope to pass the other three tests on the first try. The truth is that these tests are not easy to pass. They are not designed to be because professional drivers operating heavy, large vehicles need to possess a particular body of knowledge and a very specific skill set. The only way to ensure drivers are fit to operate on the roads is to test them rigorously on their skills and knowledge.

The HGV Training Centre provides training that both prepares drivers for their careers and teaches them the skills and information necessary to pass the required tests. What we do not do is waste the time or money of our students by putting them through instruction they do not need at the current time.

You Can Train with Us Quickly

When our company was first established, our founders were committed to making HGV training accessible to as many people as possible and in the shortest amount of time. That commitment remains the basis of our business today. Our founders established the HGV Training Centre with the goal of helping to address the professional driver shortage in a way that was both cost-effective and timely. A big part of their plan – and something we still do today – was to utilise a fast-paced and intensive training approach that can be completed in just a few weeks.

As with all of our training programmes, our HGV training in Argyll and Bute is a concentrated programme that does not waste time. It does not present students with long and cumbersome classes that take months to complete. Instead, we prefer to get right to the point immediately. We present information to students quickly and with a very concentrated focus that enables them to learn one concept at a time, building one on the next during the course of training.

The average student who learns quickly and applies him/herself can complete training in under a month. However, we also understand that some students need more time than others. That is why we offer an individualised training approach that accounts for individual needs. We will never push a student into testing if that student is not ready; rather, we will take the time to provide extra help and support to prepare the student for eventual testing. If you need more than a few weeks, that’s fine. Our goal is to get you trained and licenced no matter what it takes.

What We Teach in Our HGV Programme

Our HGV training in Argyll and Bute does indeed prepare students to be quality drivers throughout their careers. But we spend a great deal of time concentrating on the four different tests drivers will have to take in order to get their licences. Those tests are:

  1. HGV Theory Test – The theory test is a two-part test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions and 19 hazard perception videos. This is the first test taken at the start of the process. Students can prepare with one of our preparation classes or study by themselves.
  2. Case Studies Test – This test must be taken and passed in order to receive an initial CPC qualification card. It presents the student with six or seven case studies involving things the driver is likely to encounter in the workplace. Questions are then offered to determine how the student would handle each of the scenarios in a real-world setting.
  3. Driving Skills Test – The driving skills test is the one most students dread the most. It involves demonstrating you have the physical ability and mental acuity to safely drive on public roads. It includes both on-road and closed-course driving with an examiner on board.
  4. Practical Demonstration Test – Last is the practical demonstration test that is usually taken in the same session as the driving skills test. The purpose of this test is to determine whether or not a candidate possesses the full body of knowledge necessary to perform basic tasks required of drivers. Things such as walkaround checks and testing vehicle systems are included in this exam.

It would do our students little good if we presented them with the knowledge they needed to pass the tests but did not teach them how to take those tests. Believe it or not, there is a correct and incorrect way to take all four of the tests listed above. We teach our students the strategies and methodologies they need to pass without worry. Incidentally, we instil confidence in our students that they can accomplish what they have set out to do since the start of training.

Upon completion of our training and all of the necessary tests, the successful driver will have his or her HGV licence along with a five-year CPC qualification card. Those two documents are the open door to a long and rewarding career as a professional HGV driver. And by the way, most of the information in this guide also applies to PCV driving. We offer similar training programmes for those who want to drive buses, coaches, and other passenger carrying vehicles.
