Four Tests for New Drivers

In 2008, the UK adopted the EU’s Driver CPC requirements for all commercial drivers. The adoption of those requirements meant that from 2009 an entirely new testing procedure was in place. What used to involve just two tests became a four test regimen that all new drivers must undergo in order to obtain their commercial driving licences. New drivers need not worry when they train with us; we make sure all of our drivers are ready to pass their tests the first time.

The four tests for new drivers are:

• Theory Test – This test is the first in line and must be passed in order for the driver to continue training. It is a two-part test that involves 100 multiple-choice questions relating to general driving knowledge and 19 videos from which the candidate is expected to identify 20 developing hazards. A passing score on the first part is 85 while it is 67 on the second part.
• Case Studies – The case studies test presents drivers with a variety of scenarios related to things they are likely to encounter in the workplace. The studies are accompanied by multiple-choice questions testing how the candidate would handle each situation.
• Driving Skills – The driving skills test is also a two-part test designed to determine whether or not a driver can safely handle an HGV. Part of the test is conducted on the road while the other part takes place at the testing facility. The candidate will have to spend some time driving solo during this test.
• Practical Demonstration – The fourth and final test is one of practical demonstration. Each student is presented with a series of questions taken directly from the Driver CPC syllabus. Those questions must be answered with a combination of verbal explanation and physical demonstration.
