COURSE IN Dumbarton and Clydebank

The local economies of Dumbarton and Clydebank took a real beating with the closing of the historic John Brown & Company shipyard in 2000 and the Singer Corporation in 1980. The communities have rebuilt thanks to emerging tourism, education, and light industrial development over the last decade. Today the region enjoys a very good rate of employment as well as all of the that amenities residents could need. Keeping it all going is a stalwart logistics industry that provides transportation of both consumer goods and passengers.

You could be part of the local or regional logistics industry by undergoing HGV training in Dumbarton and Clydebank. We provide training at a convenient local facility that is part of a nationwide network of training centres operated by the HGV Training Centre. We are proud to train hundreds of drivers every month.

To become a professional lorry or bus driver, you must obtain a commercial driving licence in one of the following categories:

  • Category C
  • Category C+E
  • Category D
  • Category D+E.

Vehicle size and weight determine licence categories in the UK. The average lorry driver operating an articulated lorry or tipper truck has the Category C licence. Bus and coach drivers who do not tow trailers with their vehicles have Category D licences as a general rule. The other two licences are for the heaviest and largest of commercial vehicles.

At the HGV Training Centre, we can tailor your training programme to the specific kind of licence you want to earn. If you are not sure what you want to do, we can help you make that determination prior to the start of training. Be aware that whatever category you choose enables you to drive vehicles in that category plus those in some lower categories as well.

Why You Need Training

It used to be that a driver could take the tests necessary to obtain a Category C or D licence without ever going through any kind of formal training. That is no longer the case. The introduction of Driver CPC requirements in 2008 changed everything. New drivers must now undergo a minimum amount of training to satisfy CPC regulations.

The Driver CPC scheme is designed to ensure that all professional drivers are both competent and proficient. A CPC qualification card is issued at the completion of training; it must be carried by the driver at all times when working. Please note that qualification cards are only good for five years. Drivers must renew their cards by undergoing a minimum of 35 hours of training at any point during the fifth year of their current card.

You will not need to worry about CPC training when you sign up for HGV training in Dumbarton and Clydebank. We include it as part of your entire package. By the time you complete your training and take the final tests for your Category C or D licence, you will have met all of the requirements of the Driver CPC scheme. You will get your card along with your commercial driving licence provided you pass your tests.

We Train to the Tests

The importance of our training cannot be understated when you consider that passing the complete list of CPC tests is a requirement. Simply put, you cannot get your commercial driving licence if you cannot pass the four tests mandated by the CPC scheme. Therefore, we place great emphasis on teaching to the tests in order to ensure our students pass at the first attempt.

The four tests new drivers are required to take and pass are as follows:

  1. Theory Test – A two-part test measuring general driving knowledge and hazard perception
  2. Case Studies Test – A computerised test measuring knowledge of typical working conditions
  3. Driving Skills Test – A hands-on test designed to measure a driver’s physical skills
  4. Practical Demonstration Test – A ‘show me, tell me’ test designed to measure a candidate’s knowledge of the Diver CPC syllabus.

Make no mistake about it, the four tests are not easy to pass without proper training. That is why we place so much emphasis on training to the test. We teach our students the knowledge they need to answer questions confidently. We impart the skills they require to safely and proficiently handle a commercial vehicle during the road and closed course sessions of the Driving Skills test.

What we do not do is waste our student’s time by putting them through long and cumbersome programmes that teach them things they don’t need to know for testing. Those extra things do exist, but they can be left for future remedial training or on-the-job training provided by employers. There is far too much to learn and master for testing purposes to encumber students with information they do not need to know.

We Prepare Students for Success

Our HGV training in Dumbarton and Clydebank is designed to prepare students for success. We measure success in two ways. First, our primary goal is to ensure that our drivers pass their tests and get to work as quickly as possible. We have no interest in unnecessarily stretching training out for 6 to 12 months. So we utilise an intense, fast-paced training approach that most students can complete in just a few weeks of total training time.

Training in a fast-paced and intense way helps students by taking advantage of how most people naturally learn. We provide information in short, concentrated bursts or, as some people prefer to describe it, bite-size chunks. Every new lesson builds on the previous one, increasing memory and recall at test time.

Does this approach work? Absolutely. More than 90% of the students across all of our training programmes pass their tests on the first try. Our first-time pass rate is significantly higher than the national average on all commercial driving tests.

The second way we measure success is by how well our drivers do in the workplace. Suffice to say that the HGV Training Centre has an excellent reputation throughout the haulage and transport sectors. When you list us as your training provider, future employers know you are a driver who has been trained to the highest possible standards.

When you leave our facilities to enter the working world, you will be equipped to be:

  • Safe – Safety is one of our top priorities at the HGV Training Centre. We expect all of our graduates to use the knowledge they learned to maintain safety while working. The lives of every driver on the road depend on it.
  • Law Abiding – We spend a considerable amount of time in the classroom dealing with legal compliance. We want our students to know the law and abide by it at all times. Careless drivers and those who outright disobey the law give a black eye to the entire industry.
  • Efficient – Efficiency is an important part of a logistics industry now struggling to effectively deal with a driver shortage. We teach our drivers to be as efficient as possible without compromising safety or regulatory compliance.
  • Responsible – Employers expect drivers to be responsible and respectful of equipment. That means taking good care of vehicles by driving them appropriately. We teach our students how to do so.

Your success is our success. Therefore, the HGV Training Centre is fully committed to each and every student who passes through our doors. We would not be the largest provider of commercial driver training in the UK if it were not for this commitment.
