COURSE IN Dumfries & Galloway

Imagine driving along the A75 through the rolling hills of southern Dumfries & Galloway on a beautiful sunny day. Or perhaps a leisurely drive up the A77 along the western coast of Scotland, just as the sun is setting, is more to your liking. In either case, driving through the Dumfries & Galloway region offers you some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll see in the south-west of Scotland.

Untold numbers of professional HGV and PCV drivers have the pleasure of traversing these routes on a daily basis. It is all part of the lifestyle that goes with being a regional or long-haul driver. From articulated lorries to coaches filled with eager tourists, opportunities to drive professionally abound throughout Scotland and all of the UK. Does this interest you? If so, we offer comprehensive HGV training in Dumfries & Galloway.

Our training programmes can prepare you to obtain your commercial driving licence in just about a month. When you train with us, you will not be spending years in university or undergoing an apprenticeship programme with an open-ended completion date. Rather, you will participate in a very structured and systematic training programme designed to have you licenced and ready to begin applying for jobs in a short amount of time.

Reasons to Consider Professional Driving

We have already described the beautiful scenery in south-west Dumfries & Galloway as one of the benefits of professional driving. Indeed, driving an articulated lorry or coach for a living offers plenty of opportunities to see previously undiscovered parts of the UK. But there are other great reasons to consider professional driving as your career.

For example, professional drivers enjoy a level of job security not found in many other sectors. The fact is that the UK is currently undergoing a severe driver shortage unlike anything we have seen in the past. The driver who maintains regulatory compliance, an excellent safety record and a reputation for getting the job done on time is one who will not have to worry about being unemployed.

Other benefits of professional driving include:

  • Competitive Pay – The driver shortage is gradually pushing wages up industry-wide. Brand-new drivers can start at £18,000-£22,000 annually; experienced drivers can earn £35,000 and more. That’s not bad for a career that doesn’t require 6 to 8 years of university education.
  • Advancement Opportunities – Professional drivers do not have to stay behind the wheel throughout their entire careers. There are other positions available to those who want to advance. Drivers can eventually become dispatchers, fleet managers, and even driving instructors.
  • Daily Challengessome people are driven to madness by mundane tasks. They simply cannot make a career of working in an office or being part of an assembly line. Fortunately for them, professional driving offers daily challenges that are anything but mundane.
  • Travel Opportunities – It should be obvious that professional drivers enjoy the chance to travel to places they may not otherwise get to. If you want to see virtually all of the UK, a 40-year career as a long-haul lorry driver will do the trick.
  • Independence – Professional drivers enjoy independence in one of two ways. Company drivers have the freedom to work independently without managers always looking over their shoulders. Those looking for even more independence can go to work as self-employed contractors who own their equipment. Every driver can make his or her choice.

So, what do you think? Have we given you enough motivation to consider HGV training in Dumfries & Galloway? We hope so. New classes are forming all the time in your local area. Now is the time to start the training process that will prepare you for a long and productive career as a professional HGV or PCV driver.

What You Will Learn

We have been known to market our HGV training in Dumfries & Galloway as test course training for professional drivers. We do this for one simple reason: there are four tests drivers need to pass in order to obtain a commercial driving licence. Each of those tests is part of the broader Driver CPC scheme introduced in the UK in 2008.

Should you decide to train with us, and we hope you will, you will learn both the knowledge and physical skills you need to pass all four tests. The best part about choosing the HGV Training Centre as your provider is the fact that we train specifically to the tests. Doing so ensures our students have the confidence they need at testing time.

As just one example, consider the fact that all new drivers signing up to train with us are provided with free software to help prepare them for the HGV theory test. This software maximises test preparation in two ways. First, it contains hundreds of questions taken from previous tests. That means students are not reading and answering theoretical questions; they are being exposed to actual questions that have appeared on tests in the past.

Second, our software enables students to take practice tests. This is important in light of the fact that the HGV theory test is now computerised. Students answer 100 multiple-choice questions relating to general driving knowledge and highway safety. They must answer 85 correctly in order to pass. They are also shown 19 videos containing 20 developing hazards that they are expected to identify. The software utilises videos very similar to what students will see on the real test.

We train students in a variety of topics that are too numerous to list individually. For all intents and purposes, each of the topics falls under one of the following three categories:

  • Driving Theory – The classroom knowledge we teach is classified as driving theory. It includes all of the book knowledge students need to know to safely and efficiently operate commercial vehicles. For example, one of the sections deals with the regulations drivers must know in order to keep from running afoul of the law.
  • Driving Skills – It should be obvious that driving a large commercial vehicle is more difficult than driving a passenger car. New drivers have to demonstrate during the driving skills test that they can safely handle vehicles in the appropriate licence category. We impart those skills as well as giving our students plenty of time to practice using a late-model vehicle.
  • Practical Demonstration – CPC requirements mandate that students be familiar with all of the topics in the CPC syllabus. Come testing time, students will be examined to ensure they have this knowledge. Therefore, we spend time going through the syllabus in detail. We want our students to be confident during this portion of the CPC test.

Our HGV training in Dumfries & Galloway produces confident students who are more than ready to take their tests. More importantly, we do not push our students into testing if they are not ready. Our skilled instructors have been trained to watch for warning signs that a student may be struggling in a particular area, and then come alongside that student to provide the extra help and support needed to overcome his or her struggles. We only send students to testing when both they and we are confident they are prepared to pass.

Fast and Intense Training

The HGV Training Centre teaches students using a fast and intense approach to learning. This approach takes advantage of short-term memory to maximise information retention and recall. But make no mistake about it; our training approach does not result in drivers forgetting what they learned as soon as testing is over. Rather, they remember throughout their careers because they learned through a building-block process that builds every new lesson on the previous lesson.

As proof that our training approach works, consider that more than 90% of our students pass their tests the first time. By way of comparison, the average pass rate nationally for the LGV test hovers around 55%. We do better because we train our students to take and pass tests with confidence.

Our HGV training in Dumfries & Galloway is accepting new students on a regular basis. If you are looking to start a career as a professional PCV or HGV driver, we want to be your training partner.
