In order to get started on your training journey, you only need two things:

• A Valid Car Licence – The training and testing programme for getting a commercial driver licence are predicated on students already possessing a valid car licence. If you possess a Category B licence that has not been suspended or revoked, you can satisfy this requirement.
• Reasonably Good Health – Professional drivers are required to be in reasonably good health so as to not pose any danger to other drivers. You will have to undergo an HGV medical exam conducted by a licenced doctor who will verify your physical fitness.

Our Step-By-Step Training Process

HGV training in East Ayrshire is not a complicated process by any stretch of the imagination. The first step is to obtain your paperwork for the medical exam and your provisional entitlement. You can download the paperwork from the government website or get it directly from us. We provide all of our registered students with both the medical and provisional entitlement packages. With paperwork in hand and your medical exam complete, the training process is as follows:

• Provisional Entitlement Application – You will need a provisional entitlement in order to take your first exam and proceed with practical skills training. We can help you complete the application and submit it to the proper authorities in a timely manner. Once submitted, it takes between seven and ten business days to receive your entitlement in the mail. During that time, you can prepare to take the HGV theory test.
• Take the Theory Test – The HGV theory test is the first of four exams that you will take. It is a two-part exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions and 19 videos containing 20 developing hazards you are expected to identify. You can prepare for the exam by yourself or take one of our preparation classes. All of our students are provided with software enabling them to take practice exams.

• Classroom Training – Passing the HGV theory test allows you to begin your classroom training. In the classroom, you will learn additional driving theory as well as the information you will need to pass the case studies and practical demonstration tests. These two tests are given at corresponding points in your training programme.
• Hands-On Training – At the same time you were undergoing classroom training, you will also experience hands-on training using a late model vehicle corresponding to the licence you are attempting to earn. This training teaches you the skills you need to pass the driving skills test. Don’t worry, we give you plenty of opportunities to practice your driving.
• Final Exams – Upon completion of classroom and hands-on training, you will take the final two exams: the driving skills and practical demonstration exams. Both are normally taken during a single session at an approved testing facility. We will send an instructor with you to your scheduled exams.

That’s it. That is the entire process. Assuming you pass all four exams, you will be awarded a commercial driving licence and your initial CPC qualification card. Your qualification card will only be good for five years, so you should plan on returning to the HGV Training Centre to get the 35 hours of training you will need to renew your card.
