COURSE IN Fife

Trucks and buses have been an important part of the economy in Fife since the earliest days of the logistics industry. Articulated lorries carry raw materials and finished goods while bin lorries make life much more liveable by hauling away the rubbish. Buses and coaches handle the task of moving people from one place to the next quickly, efficiently, and comfortably. When all is said and done, we owe an awful lot to the men and women who make logistics and transport work in Fife.

Perhaps you are looking to embark on a new career as a professional driver. Perhaps you’re looking to become one of those drivers whose hard work and dedication make the economy work. If so, you have come to the right place. Our HGV training in Fife can prepare you for a fulfilling career doing something that few people get the opportunity to experience. Getting your commercial driving licence could be the best decision of your life – if you are the kind of person who loves to drive and wouldn’t mind earning a living doing so.

To be clear, professional driving is not right for everyone. It requires a certain skill set and body of knowledge that can only be obtained through proper training. Professional driving also requires the ability to concentrate, a willingness to be flexible, and attention to detail. Those who do the job well do not have to worry about redundancy or unemployment; they enjoy competitive pay and relatively stable job stability.

Train to Meet the Demand

The most important thing we can communicate to our website visitors is that HGV training in Fife is training that enables students to meet an ongoing demand for drivers within the haulage and transport industries. That demand is as high today as it has ever been. In fact, demand for new drivers is only expected to increase throughout the next decade. By training with us, you are preparing yourself to be part of an industry that is in desperate need of your services.

Estimates suggest that the shortage of HGV and PCV drivers in the UK is consistently in the tens of thousands. Between pending retirements and the expanding economy, it is expected that the logistics industry will need more than 100,000 new drivers through until 2025. It should be obvious that professional driving is a career with plenty of available opportunities.

Taking advantage of one of those opportunities starts by training with us. The HGV Training Centre is now the UK’s largest provider of professional driver training with more than four dozen facilities that students can choose from. Our HGV training in Fife is conveniently located, making training accessible to interested students in east-central Scotland.

Regulatory Requirements for Professionals

Regulations relating to professional driving are very stringent to protect the health and safety of everyone on the roads. In order for you to start training, a few things are necessary. First, you will need to already possess a valid Category B driving licence. If you have a current licence but it has been suspended or revoked, feel free to contact us or the DVLA for more information about how to proceed from here. You still might be able to undergo training once your licence issues have been cleared up.

Second, you must be able to pass a routine health exam. Regulations require professionals to be in reasonably good health so that they do not pose an unnecessary danger to other drivers. You do not need to be a specimen of perfect health, but your overall health needs to be good. The HGV medical exam covers the following areas:

  • Vision (with and without corrective lenses)
  • Existing physical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease
  • History of certain issues such as seizures or blackouts
  • Current and past use of drugs and alcohol.

Licenced physicians conduct HGV health exams under strict guidelines. At the conclusion of your exam, your doctor will submit the completed paperwork to the DVLA on your behalf. Unless you are generally unhealthy or suffer from a disqualifying condition, you should have no trouble passing. The medical examination is fairly routine.

Finally, regulations require all students to obtain a provisional entitlement before practical skills training can begin. A provisional entitlement is essentially a licence to train so that you can learn what you need to know in order to pass the four exams that make up the CPC regimen. Our students apply for the provisional entitlement as soon as they sign up for HGV training in Fife. It usually takes between seven and ten days to receive the entitlement in the post.

What You Will Learn in Training

Mentioning HGV training causes most people to think about getting behind the wheel of a lorry and learning how to drive it. Such training is certainly part of the programme, but there is a lot more to it than that. Driving large commercial verticals requires quite an extensive body of knowledge that covers everything from the physics of driving to how weather conditions affect handling. It even includes a significant amount of knowledge relating to driving regulations.

For example, something known as driver’s hours regulations determines how much time a driver can spend behind the wheel on any given day. Drivers need to be familiar with these regulations to prevent violations of the law. There are additional regulations pertaining to things such as keeping driver logs, maintaining proper weights and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy. All of these things are covered in our training.

Our HGV training in Fife takes students through a step-by-step process that prepares them for each of the four required exams. The first exam is known as the HGV theory test. It is a two-part test that includes both multiple-choice questions and hazard perception videos. We help our students prepare by providing advanced software that includes actual test questions and a series of mock tests. Students who want additional help can sign up for one of our preparation classes.

The other three tests required by the regulations are the case studies, driving skills, and practical demonstration tests. Each of these tests is taken at a particular point during training. You don’t have to worry about booking the tests, as our administrative staff takes care of that for you. You can simply concentrate on learning what you need to know.

Your Goal Is to Learn and Earn

Our goal as a training provider is to make sure you are ready to take and pass your exams. Your goal is to learn and earn. In other words, learning what you need to know to obtain a commercial driving licence is what training is all about. Successful training results in you earning a licence, followed by earning a decent living as a professional driver. If you can learn, you can earn. That’s what it’s all about.

We offer a complete list of training courses pertaining to every class of commercial driving licence. Whether you want to drive an articulated lorry, a construction truck, a coach or bus, or a bin lorry or box truck, we have the training you need to be successful.
