COURSE IN Gwent

Gwent is the most populated preserved county in Wales with more than 560,000 residents. Due to its shared border with England, the region is also a gateway to commerce. On any given day, countless numbers of lorries pass through the region, carrying goods and supplies. Producers in Wales send their trucks through Gwent as well, on the way to destinations in England.

Behind the wheel of every one of those lorries is a licenced driver who put in the time and effort to study and get a commercial driving licence. Some of the drivers you see day-to-day may have been trained by the HGV Training Centre. We offer HGV training in Gwent as well as dozens of other locations throughout the UK.

Most of the drivers who train with us are after one of the following four licences:

  • Category C – The Category C licence enables drivers to operate lorries between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg, towing trailers of no more than 750 kg. This is the typical licence for a bin lorry or articulated lorry driver.
  • Category C+E – This licence allows for larger lorries in excess of 7,500 kg with trailers heavier than 750 kg. It is the licence required for the biggest and heaviest commercial vehicles.
  • Category D – The category D licence is for local buses and coaches. If necessary, drivers can tow trailers of up to 750 kg behind their buses.
  • Category D+E – Last but not least is this licence, which allows bus and coach drivers to tow trailers heavier than 750 kg. This is a licence that might be needed if you were to work for a concert promotions company operating tour buses with equipment trailers.

For the record, we also offer training for other kinds of licences as well. Even if you have no intention of becoming a professional lorry driver, we can provide the type of training you would need to operate a minibus commercially or to tow a caravan, trailer or horsebox.

Fast-Track Your Career with Us

There are a lot of good reasons to consider our HGV training in Gwent. For example, consider the fact that we can have you trained and licenced in just a few weeks. We have designed comprehensive training classes that get you in and out with no wasted time; training classes that guarantee you are ready to start applying for jobs almost immediately upon completion of training.

Some of your friends may have chosen to go to university to get their degrees. There is nothing wrong with that if that’s what one wants to do. But going to university requires a two- to three-year commitment in most cases. Even when you do graduate, there is no guarantee that you will be able to find the kind of work you were trained for. None of that applies to HGV training.

First, we do not belabour training with long courses that take months to complete. We do not put students through lectures and expect them to absorb a mountain of information all in one sitting. Instead, we present information in short, concentrated bursts that take very little time to master. With every completed lesson, we move on to the next – in a quick succession that results in building-block learning.

Our training is a fast-track to getting your career started. While your friends are just getting their second university semesters under way, you could already be working and earning a living. By the time they graduate, you may have already experienced your first promotion. The demand for qualified drivers is so high in the UK that your possibilities are virtually limitless.

Fast, But Very Effective

There is no doubt that our training programme is fast when compared to a university education or other kinds of vocational training. But fast does not mean ineffective. In fact, our training approach is extremely effective when you stack it up against national averages.

For instance, a look at the annual data relating to the LGV practical test reveals an average pass rate throughout the UK of about 55%. The number goes up or down a few percentage points every year, but 55% is about right. Compare that to our first-time pass rate in excess of 90%. Our training is indeed fast, but it is also very effective. How do we do it? The secret is in how we present information.

As we have already mentioned, we present information in short, concentrated bursts. We do not do this randomly. There is actually science behind it. Short-term memory can be effectively utilised to learn a tremendous amount of information simply by taking advantage of how the brain processes the information it receives.

Short-term memory does not last very long by itself, hence the name. But when you connect multiple principles in quick succession, short-term memories are enhanced with greater understanding and awareness. By stringing together multiple principles in quick succession, those short-term memories translate into long-term memories. This approach to learning accomplishes several important things:

  • Better Understanding – Our training approach leads to a better understanding of the material by interrelating all of the topics we discuss. Students are able to retain what they need to know because they understand how it all works in an interrelated way.
  • Better Memory – A greater understanding of material lends itself well to improved memory. The more you understand the ‘nuts and bolts’ of any given topic, the more likely you are to remember that topic.
  • Better Recall – Recall is everything at testing time. One added benefit of our training methodology is that recall is improved as a direct result of better understanding and memory. The ability to quickly recall what has been learned gives our students the greatest chances of success.

We often describe our training approach as a building block approach. Think about any of the great historic buildings you know of in Wales; an ancient castle is a great example. None of the castles of old was built overnight. Many of them took decades to construct, with workers laying one stone upon another until the structures were complete. This is what we do with our HGV training in Gwent. We lay a foundation of information necessary to pass the theory test, then build on that foundation one informational block at a time. By the time training has concluded, the entire structure is erect and solid.

Your Career Is Waiting

We have explained how we successfully train hundreds of students every month. Now we want to explain why you should consider HGV training in Gwent. It comes down to a single word: career.

There are a lot of jobs in Wales that do not necessarily offer any hope of a stable career. They are just jobs designed to help you pay your bills today. But what if your company should decide to close? What if a market downturn leads to redundancy? These kinds of things, which are prevalent in so many other sectors, are rare in the logistics industry.

As with healthcare, logistics is one of those industries that the UK literally cannot do without. That means the average HGV or PCV driver never has to worry about being out of work as long as he or she works hard and meets employer expectations. The overall stability that comes with the job opens the door to a long and productive career rather than employment that may not last through one’s entire working life.

If you are looking for competitive pay, unparalleled job stability, and the freedom of the open road, professional driving might be the perfect career for you. We can get you started on our HGV training in Gwent.
