COURSE IN Gwynedd

Driving along the coast of Gwynedd is a great way to spend an afternoon. It’s even better when you are getting paid for doing so. Who gets paid for driving up and down the coast, you ask? Professional HGV and PCV drivers who made the effort to earn their commercial driving licences. You can join their ranks by registering for HGV training Gwynedd.

Driving the GV lorry during training in Gwynedd

Our training programme in Gwynedd is part of a much larger organisation that includes more than four dozen training facilities throughout the UK. The drivers we train in north-west Wales go on to become productive workers capable of contributing substantially to the UK economy. Their hard work and dedication make it possible for you and I to enjoy affordable consumer goods along with a generally comfortable lifestyle.

We urge you to consider a career as a professional driver whether you are young and just getting started or an older worker looking for a new career. Professional driving offers competitive pay, unusual job security, room for advancement, and plenty of adventure out on the open road. We can help you make it happen with our industry-leading classes.

Working in the Logistics Industry

Our HGV training in Gwynedd will prepare you to work in the logistics industry as a safe and competent driver. If articulated lorries and other kinds of HGV equipment is not necessarily your preference, please note that we also provide PCV training for bus and coach drivers. In fact, we train drivers for every category of commercial licence currently available. We even train non-professionals looking to tow trailers or operate horseboxes.

Getting back to professional HGV drivers, there are four basic categories of driving to choose from:

  • Local – Local drivers handle routes and deliveries within the general vicinity of the operator, usually not venturing more than 50 to 60 miles in any direction. Drivers can operate articulated lorries, cargo vans, tipper trucks, bin lorries, and box trucks.
  • Regional – Driving a regional route may include deliveries within a one- or two-county area. Regional jobs are usually related to moving freight from warehouses and distribution centres to retailers or end-users. Regional drivers may spend a night or two on the road, but they are home most nights.
  • National – National drivers can drive anywhere in the UK or mainland Europe. They typically drive articulated lorries carrying consumer goods, food products, equipment, and other forms of freight from one distribution centre to the next.
  • Intermodal – Intermodal transport is a unique kind of transport that involves moving shipping crates via numerous forms of transportation. Crates may arrive on ships, then be moved by lorry and/or freight train prior to arriving at their final destination. Intermodal drivers spend a lot of time in ports and shipping yards.

Each of these jobs requires one of four categories of commercial driving licences. We can help you figure out what licence you need based on the kinds of vehicles you want to drive. If you want to drive them all, the Category C+E is the licence for you. It is a licence that covers just about every commercial vehicle not used for transporting passengers.

Classes for Real People

One of the things that sets the HGV Training Centre apart is the way we treat our students. To us, you are not just part of a nameless, faceless revenue stream. You are a real person attempting to learn the skills and knowledge you need to be a career professional. You are someone who learns in your own way and at your own pace; you are someone who can become a successful professional with the right kind of training.

We provide that training to hundreds of students every single month. Through our HGV training in Gwynedd, local drivers are learning what they need to learn to obtain their commercial driving licences. They are learning the driving theory that will make them the safest possible; they are learning the physical skills necessary to safely navigate the public road systems in a large, commercial vehicle; they are learning many of the practical skills that employers are looking for during the hiring process. In short, our training classes are for real people who are looking to be professional drivers.

Our classes start with preparation for the HGV theory test. This two-part test must be passed before a driver can continue onto practical skills training. The test involves:

  • Multiple-Choice – The first part of the test subjects the candidate to 100 multiple-choice questions via a computer interface. The questions test the individual’s knowledge of general highway safety as it applies to commercial driving. The student must get 85 of the questions correct in order to pass.
  • Hazard Awareness – The second part of the test involves 19 videos containing 20 developing hazards. Candidates are scored based on how quickly and accurately they identify the developing hazards. A passing score on this section of the test is 67.

You can take the two parts of the theory test independently or during the same session. Should you fail one or both parts, you can retest after three days. You should note that both parts have to be passed within two years in order for the results to be valid.

We help our students prepare for the theory test by offering free software to every new student who registers for HGV training in Gwynedd. That software contains real questions taken from previous tests as well as multiple practice tests that students can take to become familiar with what the actual exam will be like. We offer a preparation class for those who want the extra instruction.

Beyond the Theory Test

Taking and passing the theory test is just the start. With a passing grade and a provisional of entitlement, the student is then able to undergo several weeks of intense practical skills training at our Gwynedd facility. Students spend time both in the classroom and out on the driving course. Our aim is to present all of the information in a way that is easy to learn, followed by plenty of opportunities to practice in anticipation of final testing.

The key to our training programme is the way we present information. Rather than using extended classes that impart a large body of information over extended periods of time, we prefer to present information in short, concentrated bursts. Every lesson learned is followed by the next lesson in quick succession. This creates a fast-paced and intense learning environment that takes advantage of short-term memory.

By the time the student completes a given class, he or she not only remembers what was taught but also has the ability to ‘connect the dots’ and recall the necessary information at testing time. We have utilised this training approach since the founding of our company with great success. More than 90% of our students pass all of the tests on the first attempt.

Completing training and obtaining a commercial driving licence also means earning a Driver CPC qualification card. Having a qualification card is now mandatory in the UK. As such, much of the preparation students go through in our training classes is designed to prepare them for the CPC testing regimen. A CPC qualification card is good for five calendar years, beginning in the year it was issued; it must be renewed in the fifth year through 35 hours of additional CPC training.
