COURSE IN Northumberland

As a resident of Northumberland, you are probably aware of the thriving economy in your county – an economy based on pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare and light industrial. Companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Procter & Gamble work alongside other big names such as Fujifilm and Coca-Cola to create a bustling region of commercial activity. The sheer volume of business in the county is one of the things that led us to establish our HGV training in Northumberland.

We operate a training facility in the county because we understand that all of those businesses rely on a thriving logistics sector to do what they do. For example, pharmaceutical companies would not be able to produce the life-saving medications they offer without the capability to receive the raw materials and supplies they need. Manufacturers and light industrial companies would not be able to ship their finished goods outside of Northumberland without a fleet of trucks capable of carrying those goods. Simply put, it is logistics that provides the lifeblood of Northumberland’s business environment.

Have you ever considered becoming a professional HGV driver? If not, perhaps you should. Professional drivers are in high demand – both in Northumberland and across the UK. HGV driving is one employment sector in which you will never have to worry about being out of work. There are tens of thousands of vacant jobs just waiting to be filled by licenced drivers that employers can depend on. If you think you can be one of them, consider registering for our HGV training in Northumberland.

Your Training Partner Matters

The HGV Training Centre is more than just a training company helping future drivers get their licences. We prefer to think of ourselves as a training partner inasmuch as we prepare our students for long and productive careers. Does this matter? Yes, it does. Your choice of training partners will go a long way toward determining the kind of jobs you can apply for and how potential employers view you.

Listing us as your training partner does not guarantee you employment. It does, however, tell prospective employers that you have been trained by the best in the business. The HGV Training Centre is the largest provider of commercial driving training in the UK because we are 100% committed to the success of our students. Employers know that. They know the training you receive from us is in line with the highest standards possible.

For the record, the HGV Training Centre is licenced by the JAUPT to provide comprehensive CPC training for professional drivers. We are also members of the Freight Transport Association and the Logistics Guild. Our licence and industry associations are testament to the high standards of our training and our daily commitment to do right by our students and the logistics industry as a whole.

You Will Learn to Succeed

Should you choose to register for our HGV training in Northumberland, and we sincerely hope you will, be prepared to succeed. Every step of our training process is designed to ensure just that. We will teach you:

  • Driving Theory – There is a long list of theoretical principles that drivers have to learn before they can get behind the wheel of an HGV. For example, students need to understand how size and weight influence everything from acceleration to cornering to controlling stops. Much of the knowledge learned in this portion of the training will be necessary to pass the HGV theory test.
  • Driving Skills – You obviously need to learn the physical skills necessary to drive large commercial vehicles. Examiners will be paying attention to how you handle your vehicle at testing time, so we will be sure to train you in accordance to what they will be looking for. We also give our students plenty of time to practice using late-model vehicles typical of what is currently used in the industry.
  • Practical Skills – Professional driving goes above and beyond simply pressing the accelerator pedal and using the steering wheel. There are certain practical skills you must learn to be successful. We teach the skills, along with the proper techniques for taking the associated exam.

Completing your training at the HGV Training Centre will mean you have the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain a commercial driving licence. That licence is your open door to a lifetime of exciting and challenging employment. You can choose to apply for jobs in Northumberland, or go anywhere in the UK you think you might want to work. You can even undergo additional training that will increase your earning power with every new specialised certificate you earn.

Help Finding a Job

Some companies offering HGV training in Northumberland do not go any further than helping you get your licence. We don’t stop there. Once you have your licence, we will help you find a job through our job placement assistance programme. Assistance includes access to an up-to-date jobs database covering every advertised job in the UK.

Make no mistake about it; there are lots of different jobs to choose from. For example, you could choose:

  • Local Delivery – Local drivers tend to operate smaller HGVs and cargo vans in metropolitan areas like Manchester, Liverpool, and even London. They follow the same routes every day and are usually home at the end of their shifts.
  • Regional Delivery – Regional drivers tend to operate articulated lorries and larger box trucks, making deliveries in regional areas that can take them 50-100 miles away from their origin. Regional jobs may require overnight travel from time to time, but drivers tend to be home frequently.
  • Long Haul – Long-haul driving jobs are those jobs that take lorry drivers across the UK and Europe. These jobs tend to pay more than local or regional delivery, but there is a trade-off: drivers are away from home for longer periods of time.
  • Intermodal Transport – Intermodal jobs involves moving shipping containers to and from UK ports. Shipping containers are loaded onto trailers and then moved by lorry to wherever they are going. This is an ideal position for someone who also likes being around ships and trains.

Within the four categories listed above, there are an endless number of combinations in terms of cargo and trailers. You might move a dry goods trailer on one run, and then turn around and haul a load on the back of a flatbed trailer on your next run. It really all depends on your employer and the kinds of jobs they contract for.

Of course, you always have the option of being an independent contractor. Drivers who choose this type of work are choosing to be self-employed rather than working for a single company. Independent contractors can earn very good money with a few years of experience and a solid reputation for getting the job done. The only downside is that of taking responsibility for your equipment.
