HGV Training in South Yorkshire

Logistics is vital to the economy of South Yorkshire. Like any other area of England, South Yorkshire depends on a solid logistics industry to move goods and passengers throughout the county. If that logistics infrastructure were not available, life in north-central England would be remarkably different.

Just as logistics is vital to the region, so is our HGV training in South Yorkshire to the logistics industry. Companies throughout England and the rest of the UK depend on us to train new drivers who are capable of driving the HGVs and PCVs that make the economy move. We are proud to be the largest provider of HGV driver training in the UK.

The students who pass through our doors are after one of eight different licences needed to operate commercial vehicles. Our drivers are trained to drive:

Of course, the kinds of vehicles commercial drivers are allowed to operate depend on the licence each one possesses. If you are interested in training to become a professional driver, we can help you decide which of the licences is most appropriate to your career goals. The higher the category of your licence, the more vehicles you will be able to drive professionally.

Prerequisites for All Professional Drivers

We get a lot of very good questions from potential students who call us, beginning with the question of prerequisites. In other words, what are the prerequisite qualifications to begin our HGV training in South Yorkshire?

In order to begin training, you must:

The first thing we would do as a training provider is validate your Category B driving licence. We need to know that your licence is legitimate before we can proceed. Next, we would provide you with the necessary medical paperwork that needs to be submitted to the DVLA. You do not complete the paperwork – your doctor does – but we provide it so that you do not have to procure it yourself prior to seeing your doctor. We even provide our students with contact information for doctors offering medical exams at good prices.

In addition to the medical paperwork, our students receive the application and instruction materials for the provisional entitlement. Applications must be completed and submitted to the DVLA in order to proceed any further. Without the provisional entitlement, a driver cannot sit for the HGV theory test or transition into practical skills training. For the record, our support staff can help you complete your provisional entitlement paperwork and get it submitted in a timely manner.

Preparing for the Theory Test

You will need your provisional entitlement before you can take the theory test. However, it can take between 10 business days and a couple of weeks for your entitlement to arrive in the post. That is time best spent preparing for the theory test by studying by yourself, taking a preparation class through the HGV Training Centre, or both. The more effort you put into preparing, the better your chances of passing the first time.

We do everything we can to prepare students for the theory test by way of our preparation classes and free software given to every student. That software contains questions from past tests as well as several practice tests students can take at their own pace. Practice tests are a great tool you can use to become familiar with the testing process long before you ever have to sit for the real thing.

Just so you know, the HGV theory test is a two-part test involving both multiple-choice questions and videos. The videos contain developing hazards you must learn to identify correctly and in a reasonable amount of time; you take the test using a computer and the touch screen. If you are not familiar with this kind of test, worry not; taking practice tests will prepare you for it.

Moving On to Practical Skills Training

Passing the HGV theory test allows you to transition into practical skills training. For our money, this is the most exciting part of the process. Practical skills training teaches you the knowledge and skills you need to be a great driver. It is training that is conducted both in the classroom and behind the wheel of a late model vehicle commensurate with the licence you are attempting to obtain.

In the classroom, students learn a significant amount of book knowledge pertaining to:

As important as classroom training is, it is no substitute for actually sitting in the driver’s seat and driving. Our HGV training in South Yorkshire puts a lot of emphasis on behind-the-wheel training in order to prepare students to pass the driving skills test. Our instructors will teach you everything you need to know about accelerating, shifting gears, cornering, stopping, and even conducting reversing manoeuvres. You will also be afforded plenty of opportunity to practice your skills.

Demonstrating You Have What It Takes

The capstone of your training is demonstrating to DVLA examiners that you have what it takes to be a professional driver. By the time you get to this point, you will have already taken and passed the first two tests in the Driver CPC regimen. Your final two tests will be taken together at an approved testing facility, accompanied by one of our instructors.

These final two tests are your opportunity to shine as a driver. Our HGV training in South Yorkshire will equip you to approach these two tests with the utmost confidence that you will pass. You’ll know exactly what you need to know; you will have spent plenty of time practising your driving technique; you will fully understand what examiners expect of you.

We succeed in training our drivers (more than 90% of our students pass their tests on the first try) because we know what examiners are looking for. Our training programme is designed specifically to meet those expectations without compromise. Choosing our HGV training in South Yorkshire means you are choosing a training programme designed with one goal in mind: to make sure you succeed.
