20-year-old Woman Earns PCV Licence and Will Join Family Business

A 20-year-old female student from Perthshire has done something very few young woman ever consider doing: she has earned her PCV licence to become a coach driver in her family’s business. Nicola Docherty is currently a student at Glasgow University, but she intends to return home after her studies to drive for Docherty’s Midland Coaches.

The company is run by her father and two uncles out of Auchterarder. Nicola will become the fourth generation to drive for the family business when she finally gets behind the wheel full-time. She told reporters that, although she did not grow up wanting to be a bus driver, she decided as an adult it was what she wanted to do.

The most impressive part of Ms Docherty’s story is that she was able to successfully earn her license just one month after beginning training. That’s not a bad way to spend one’s summer holiday. While her peers were engaged in part-time work as sales clerks or waiters, Nicola was preparing for the future.

Docherty said that most of her friends were a bit surprised when they first heard of her summer plans. Many could not believe she was really learning to drive a 50-seat bus. However, she went on to say that, they were all excited when she completed training and had her PCV license in hand. Perhaps Docherty will be taking some of them on future bus trips.

We wish Docherty well on her bus-driving career. We hope her story will inspire more young people, especially women, to consider careers as professional bus or coach drivers. The industry could use some fresh blood with a willingness to work hard and serve their customers.
