When you embark on an exciting and rewarding career as an HGV driver, the training phase is perhaps the most vital of all, as it’s critical to getting behind the wheel for real. You may already have a job while you’re training for your licence, meaning you’ve got to meet your existing obligations while learning your new trade.

As such, it’s important to strike a balance between training and work so that you keep stress levels to a minimum. That’s what we examine here, as we give you a few tips on getting the blend right so you get to where you want to go with the least possible hassle and disruption.

Tip #1 Managing Your Time Effectively

Naturally, when you’re holding down your existing job and trying to progress through your HGV training, time is going to be in short supply. That’s why you must manage it effectively and create a structured schedule or diary for specific work, study and rest time.

You can use the old-fashioned pen-and-paper method to organise yourself or use free tools like Google Calendar. Either way, having a firm idea of what you’re doing each day – and sticking to it – is key to your success.

Tip #2 – Self-Care & Stress Management

The fact is that spinning multiple plates in your life at the same time can make for a stressful time. However, when you practice self-care (eating right, exercising and getting plenty of sleep), your stress levels can be much lower than they would be.

Something else that helps boost your inner calm is taking care of the theory practice side of your training using the HGVT App for Theory. Available to all HGVT learners, it lets you practice your theory questions and even study CPC case studies from the palm of your hand.

Tip #3 – Use Holiday Days for Practical HGV Training

While it can take anywhere from 6-20 weeks to train to be a fully-fledged HGV driver in the UK, the practical side only covers roughly five days. That means this is the only part of your HGV training that needs to be taken off work. So, if you’re worried about getting time off from your current job, consider using some of your holiday days.

When training with HGVT, you enjoy flexibility in your training schedules, so they can be booked at your convenience. As such, if you have a full-time job and an employer who may not be sympathetic to your future ambitions, it’s one less worry to think about.

HGVT Supports You at Every Step of Your Journey

At HGVT, we’re committed to making your journey to becoming a professional HGV driver as stress-free and painless as possible. By following the tips we’ve described here, you can ensure that you always have enough time to complete what needs to be done without any unnecessary added stress.
