The HGV Training Centre is proud to say that our preparation classes ensure students pass the theory test the first time at a rate of 92%. However, it is not necessary to take a preparation class before taking the PCV or HGV theory test. Students can prepare by themselves if they so desire. We help our students by letting them practice beforehand, but independent studies can do the same thing.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) administer the official theory test. Drivers will take a different test depending on the vehicle they are hoping to drive. That means there are different theory tests for motorcycles, cars, lorries and other HGVs, and PCVs (buses and coaches). The PCV and HGV theory tests obviously entail more than the tests for cars and motorcycles.
If you are looking to practice before taking your test, there are plenty of online resources providing free practice tests. There are also smartphone apps that list hundreds of different questions known to be on the most recent editions of the official government exam. Either of these options is suitable for practising. It should be noted that no organisation offering practice tests is authorised to use actual testing materials from the DVSA, meaning the tests you practice with do not promise 100% accuracy.
HGV Theory Test Basics
The theory test for both HGVs and PCVs is comprised of two sections. The first section tests general knowledge of vehicle operation and highway safety; the second section tests hazard perception and avoidance. In total, you will answer 100 multiple-choice questions in order to demonstrate competence in both areas. Both tests must be passed before you can begin practical skills training to drive an HGV or PCV.
A few other things you need to know are as follows:
- Test Booking – The DVSA makes it as easy as possible to book your theory test by doing so online. You will need to have a provisional licence number, e-mail address, and either a credit or a debit card to make payment.
- Test Scheduling – You can take both sections of the test at the same time or split them up into separate sessions, whichever you prefer. However, you must pass both within two years of one another in order for them to remain valid. You cannot get a provisional entitlement to begin training without passing both.
- Test Failure – In the event you fail one or both sections of the theory test, you must wait three days before retesting. This is done to both reduce the chances of cheating and give you enough time to prepare for taking the test again.
If you would like assistance preparing for the PCV or HGV theory test, do not hesitate to contact us at the HGV Training Centre. Our classes are convenient, very affordable, and very effective at preparing you to take your test. Once you pass, you can begin practical skills training with us.
