HGV Training offers training and licensing all over the UK, as well as full job listings for HGV driving jobs in every city. Two of our most popular places both for job listings and for uptake on our training courses are Glasgow and Manchester.

Bearing that in mind, we’ve decided to do a direct comparison of the two cities, for jobs in Manchester vs Glasgow and for driving conditions, so you can work out which you’d prefer. We’ve looked at available work, wages, traffic and bridges to give you an idea of what’s what in both locations.

The state of the traffic wherever you’re working is a big thing to take into consideration because as we all know it’s a huge myth that you and your HGV are the cause of traffic jams. We’ve included some information about what kind of congestion and driving problems you might face in either city.

A UK-based HGV driver’s wages are always a hot topic, both in the UK and abroad so we’ve also included some information on pay. One thing is for sure though, you’re not likely to find a shortage of jobs in either location, considering there are more HGV jobs out there now than there are drivers to fill them. With just 2% of HGV drivers currently under 25, the industry needs new people as quickly as possible, so you can have your choice of work anywhere in the country.

HGV Jobs in Manchester

According to the available jobs on our JobFinder service, if you are an HGV driver, jobs in Manchester can earn up to £20 per hour for full-time work, equivalent to £750 per week. Among the big employers in Manchester are several businesses who ship out to the UK and beyond. You can also find work through one particular agency called Strike Jobs, who specialises in temporary and permanent HGV driving jobs in Manchester and beyond, with some of the highest wages going.

Darren Bell Recruitment is a big recruiter for drivers offering opportunities at the higher end of the pay scale, including work for a large bakery client requiring deliveries all over the country. When comparing HGV work in both cities, the Department for Transport released figures for last year showing that the distribution of licensed HGVs was weighted in Manchester’s favour. The North West had 13% of all the UK’s HGVs. Traffic congestion in and around Manchester tends to be heavier than Glasgow, with many major roads and more chance of delays and accidents. Transport for Manchester has identified 167 low bridges in Manchester and the surrounding area, including in Stockport, Wigan, Bury, Bolton, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside and Trafford.

HGV Jobs in Glasgow

HGV jobs in Glasgow specifically are far thinner on the ground and offer a lower wage than those in Manchester. £14 per hour is as high as driving jobs go at the moment, according to listings on our Job Finder, and jobs tend to come directly from employers rather than via agencies.
