From time to time, the HGV Training Centre fields inquiries from individuals wanting to know what driver training entails. Although it is not complicated, there is quite a bit involved in the process. The process begins with the HGV medical test.
UK law requires all professional drivers to pass a routine medical exam prior to beginning training. Thereafter, the driver must maintain a certain level of medical fitness in order to hold onto his or her licence. Most individuals will easily pass the test unless they have some notable physical impairment that would prevent them from driving safely.
The HGV medical test consists of two parts:
- Physician Discussion – The first part of the test is nothing more than a discussion with your doctor regarding your current physical state and any past issues you may have had. The doctor is looking for any information that would suggest a disqualifying medical condition. Drivers should make a note of answering all questions truthfully. Lying during the exam brings with it serious consequences.
- Physical Exam – The second part of the test is an actual physical exam conducted by the physician. This exam covers everything from eyesight to heart rate and blood pressure to musculoskeletal functioning. There is no routine blood test required unless a doctor suspects an underlying condition that needs to be confirmed.
Qualifying Doctors
HGV drivers need to be aware that the medical test can only be conducted by registered doctors. That being said, it matters not whether you received the exam from a private physician or one that works for the NHS. As long as a physician is registered, he or she is capable of administering the exam.
Individuals are encouraged to use NHS physicians when possible; private doctors can charge upwards of £150 or more. In cases where the employer pays for the medical exam, individual drivers need not worry about the cost. The employer will cover it.
What We Do for You
Our goal at the HGV Training Centre is to do whatever is necessary to get you licensed and working as quickly as possible. If that means you need help obtaining, filling out and submitting your medical paperwork, we can do that. The process is not complicated, but it does need to be done correctly.
Once you’ve passed your medical test you can apply for the provisional entitlement that allows you to begin practical skills training. However, you must pass the HGV theory test before that training can begin. Since it usually takes 7 to 10 days to receive your provisional entitlement, we suggest you use that time to study for the theory test.
The HGV Training Centre offers classes to prepare you for the theory test. You will be pleased to know that we have a 92% first-time pass rate among those who prepare with us. After passing the theory test, you can begin your practical skills training. Upon completion, we’ll send one of our trainers with you to take your practical skills test.
