With little time remaining before PCV drivers in the UK must complete their 35 hours of CPC training, the race is on among haulage companies and other HGV operators to complete their training as well. Reports have begun surfacing that shows more HGV operators are finally taking the regulations seriously.
PCV drivers must complete CPC training no later than September of this year. HGV drivers have until September of next year. Drivers who fail to complete training could lose their jobs or face a £1000 fine. Yet despite the risk of penalties, a good portion of the nation’s commercial drivers have not started CPC driver training.
According to industry experts, that trend is beginning to change. For example, the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) told HGV UK they are seeing more oil distributors taking up the training as the summer wears on. The training offered by FPS is specialised training for the petroleum industry designed to fill the in gaps left by general CPC training.
Earlier in August, Vmoves’ general manager David Whyte told Fleet Directory News that his company was planning to have all 150 of its drivers CPC certified by April. Vmoves is a transport company specialising in vehicle movement services.
Industry analysts suggest a couple of reasons for the sudden surge in CPC training among haulage companies. First is the realisation that PCV operators are now finding themselves in trouble without enough certified drivers. The haulage industry does not want to risk that same scenario this time next year.
Second, there appears to be a desire to get the training done before tuition fees start to rise. It is expected that those fees will climb the closer we get to next year’s deadline. Companies with a fleet of drivers stand to save a lot of money by taking care of certification now.
The HGV Training Centre wants you to know that we provide CPC training in all our facilities. Whether you are an independent driver or you work for company, our fully comprehensive training will certify you and enable you to continue driving legally in the UK following next year’s deadline.
If you are not yet a licensed HGV driver, you do not have to worry about CPC training; it is now part of the standard training regimen for all new students.
When you train as a new student, you’ll be prepared to pass both the theory and practical skills tests the first time around. Our approach is designed to train you only in those areas necessary for passing your test. Is a strategy that has proved successful as demonstrated by our 92% first-time pass rate for the HGV theory test.
If you are a company owner or Fleet manager, now is the time to start thinking about CPC training for your drivers. Do the smart thing; do not put it off. The longer you wait the more difficult it will become to get it done. Classes will fill up quickly as we turn the calendar into the New Year.
