What’s the difference between LGV and HGV?

Both refer to a commercially sized vehicle which can be used to transport goods, making it a very flexible qualification to have. With this type of licence, you can operate an articulated lorry, bin truck, a transit van and construction vehicle, as well as many other types of professional vehicles too.

What licences do we offer?

We offer several different types of HGV/LGV licence. These include:

Cat C

With this licence, you can drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg.

Cat C+E

With this licence, you can drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer over 750kg.

Cat C1

With this licence, you can drive vehicles between 3,500 and 7,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg.

Cat C1+E

With this licence, you can drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer over 750kg.

What if I’m a non-UK driver?

Non-UK drivers, for example, drivers from the EU, can still drive professionally in this country. All you need to do is make sure you meet the minimum age requirements for your vehicle and have a full driving licence for the type of vehicle you want to drive. One thing you need to be aware of is that you may need to do some basic professional training in this country first, known as the Driver CPC. This is a universal test to check that you have the right skills to drive professionally on UK road.
