Getting a trailer licence in the UK is a relatively common thing to do. Here at the HGVT (HGV Training Centre), we routinely run classes for students looking to obtain a Category B+E or Category C1 licence to tow a cargo trailer, caravan, or horsebox trailer. Better yet, our trailer licence cost is very and reasonable when compared to our competitors. With a minimal investment in time and financial resources, you can be legally licenced to tow a trailer with your car.

So, how much does getting a trailer licence cost? We cannot give you a hard and fast number because there are several things in play. Of course, there is the cost of tuition (hours of training required is different for different individuals) for your training programme. Then you may have to spend a bit of money on your car and trailer to make sure it meets legal standards prior to taking the trailer test. You will also have to pay for the test itself. The best way to work out how much you will spend is to contact us at the HGVT (HGV Training Centre) on 08000315765 and speak to one of our training specialists.
In the remainder of the guide, we will briefly explain each of the three categories of costs listed above. We want you to understand exactly what you are paying for as you go through the training and licencing process. Hopefully, you will discover that your actual trailer licence cost is well worth the investment because it gives you the opportunity to do some things that were previously unavailable to you.
The Cost of Trailer Training
The first and most immediate expense associated with getting your trailer licence is paying for your training. There are companies all across the UK offering a variety of training programmes, from the most basic to the incredibly complex. Here at the HGVT (HGV Training Centre), we like to think of our car and trailer programme as being ‘just right’.
Our training goes well beyond simple towing basics that may not necessarily prepare you to pass your car and trailer test. At the same time, we do not put our students through a long and complicated class that deals with a lot of information the car and trailer test does not require. We provide just what you need – both in classroom knowledge and practical experience.
We offer three different training courses depending on experience levels. These courses are:
- One-Day Course – This is the shortest and most cost-effective course for cars and trailers. It is intended for drivers who already have the appropriate licence but just need to update their knowledge and refresh their skills.
- Three-Day Course – Our three-day course is designed for drivers who may be experienced but who are not yet licenced. Perhaps they have been towing trailers around the private property for years but now have a need to tow on public roads.
- Five-Day Course – Our five-day course is for the completely inexperienced driver who has never towed a trailer before. This course is obviously the most comprehensive of the three.

We do not publish the tuition prices for our car and trailer courses here on our website because they are subject to change. However, you need only contact us on 08000315765 to know more about our pricing. One of our customer service specialists would be happy to walk you through the trailer licence cost related to the particular course you are interested in taking.
Vehicle and Trailer Costs
When it comes time for you to actually take your car and trailer test, you will need to supply your own vehicles. However, you cannot bring just any car and trailer to the test. Both vehicles need to meet minimum safety standards before the test is conducted. If an examiner determines your car and trailer do not meet standards, he or she will disqualify the vehicles and refuse to conduct the test.
Assuming your car and trailer are already up to standard, you may not need to spend any additional money. But be absolutely sure; the last thing you want is to drive to the testing centre, wait for your turn, and then find out you cannot be tested because your vehicles do not qualify.
Pay particular attention to the following:
- MOT – If your car is required to have a valid MOT for use on public roads, that needs to be taken care of before your car and trailer test. Not only will an invalid MOT prevent you from taking your test, but it could also result in additional penalties for driving the car on public roads in its current condition.
- Mirrors – The tow vehicle you bring to the test must have externally mounted nearside and offside mirrors. The offside mirrors are for the examiners use throughout the test. If your car does not have them, you will have to purchase the mirrors before taking the test. These can be found at any retailer where trailer parts and accessories are sold.
- Tow Brackets – The tow brackets you use must be approved for the vehicle you are driving. Each bracket will have some sort of stamp or label that includes an approval number and a description of the type of vehicle that it has been approved for. If your tow brackets do not match your tow vehicle, you may have to purchase new brackets before your test.
- Indicators – Your tow vehicle must include a device that demonstrates your indicators are working. This device can be audio or visual, and most new cars have such device built-in at the factory. If you are driving an older car, you may have to install a separate device for this purpose.
As you can see, the requirements for tow vehicles and trailers are rather stringent. Getting your car and trailer up to standards might require a significant investment before taking the test. However, it is a long-term investment that has to be made anyway – whether you do it just prior to your test or a few months down the line.
The Cost of Booking Your Test With Us
The final thing to consider relating to trailer licence cost is booking your test. The good news is that you do not need an additional theory test in order to get your trailer licence, so there is no extra cost there. We also offer finance, that means you can now book your course for just £10 and pay nothing for 3 months. For current Prices please call us on 08000315765
There is more to the trailer licence cost than meets the eye. Drivers invest in their training, their cars and trailers, and in booking their tests. We cannot help with any costs associated with updating your car and trailer, but we can help with tuition costs for training. We offer a financing package made available through our partnership with Afford it Now on, every course in our catalogue. By financing your training now, you will be able to earn your trailer licence and pay for your training over time. And for the record, our fee includes the cost of booking the first test for you.
If you need to earn your trailer licence, we encourage you to contact the HGVT (HGV Training Centre). We keep our trailer licence cost as low as possible so that you can afford it. Contact us to learn more about pricing and class schedules.
