The implementation of CPC training requirements in the UK between 2012 and 2014 resulted in a number of companies doing very well by offering training and certification. One such company, Skills for Logistics (SfL), has announced it is going into administration. The announcement came as a surprise given the fact that SfL has been one of the major players in overseeing CPC training. It seems as though pension obligations and other financial stresses are proving too much for the company to endure.

It is hard to imagine SfL in financial trouble in light of the Government collecting some £40 million in fees since the training programme was implemented in 2009. If the Government has collected that much, companies such as SfL must have also collected a good deal of money. Nonetheless, the demise of SfL is what it is. CPC training will continue despite the company’s closure.

Ongoing Requirements

Now that the CPC deadlines for both PCV and HGV drivers has passed, training will focus on two groups of drivers going forward. The first group are new drivers earning commercial licences for the first time. Since 2009, these drivers have received CPC training as part of their overall commercial training package. All brand-new drivers will continue to receive that training as well.

The second group are current drivers that were for certified between 2010 and 2014. They will have to undergo remedial CPC training once every five years in order to retain their licences. Remedial training includes 35 hours of classroom time, which earns the driver a certificate of competency enabling him/her to continue working. That certificate must be carried with the driver at all times while working.

Drivers who fail to earn certification could face significant fines and the loss of their licence should they be caught driving without a valid certificate. This is one area in which drivers do not want to take chances. The Government is strictly enforcing CPC requirements across the board.
