HGV drivers that need to cross one of the two Severn crossings between England and Wales currently pay very expensive tolls for the privilege of doing so. However, in light of the fact that both crossings revert to public ownership in 2018, Newport East MP Jessica Morden is now asking questions about the future of the tolls and how that money will be spent. She has opened a discussion on the subject in the House of Commons.

HGV UK reports that the Freight Transport Association (FTA) stands behind Morden’s public request for ‘more openness’ from the treasury. They agree it is important for ministers to decide, well in advance of 2018, whether the government will continue collecting the tolls currently in place or reduce them. In a perfect world, these would be eliminated altogether. That’s not likely to happen, however.

As a company offering HGV training in Gloucestershire, we are well aware of the amount of lorry traffic using both Severn crossings. It seems reasonable to seriously look at an FTA request to reduce the tolls in 2018 to only the level necessary to properly maintain the crossings. We agree it makes little sense to continue collecting the higher tolls being charged today. In the end, it is a decision the ministers will have to make.

In the meantime, FTA members and other HGV drivers will continue to pay thousands of pounds annually to cross the river Severn between England and Wales. That expense is ultimately passed on to customers through higher prices for goods and services.
