In what can only be described as a very dramatic accident, a lorry driver’s dash mounted camera has cleared him of any wrongdoing. His camera recorded the entire incident – in real time – as it unfolded, leaving everyone involved thankful that the consequences of the M25 crash were not more serious.

Video from the camera shows the driver travelling on the inside lane of the motorway when the driver of a Honda Civic attempted to merge into traffic at a junction. Yet the driver failed to get up to speed and, instead, made contact with the HGV, turning the car sideways as it was pushed by the lorry down the hard shoulder.

Thanks to the video showing the lorry driver’s speed and driving were both appropriate, neither he nor his company will face any action from the law or the insurance companies involved. The same probably cannot be said for the driver of the Honda. As for the dash cam, we are likely to see more of them used in the future.

Beyond the drama of this particular accident, it is important to not lose sight of the broader highway safety issue.  It is easy to blame HGV drivers as being the ones mainly responsible for crashes involving their vehicles and cars. However, the fact remains that highway safety is the responsibility of every driver on the road.

Highway Safety Concerns

The HGV theory test is designed to make sure drivers of large vehicles have appropriate highway safety knowledge, just as a similar test taken by car drivers does. Nevertheless, real-life highway safety requires more than just the knowledge needed to pass a 100-question test.

Drivers of all classes need to always be cognisant of how their actions might affect others. They need to be aware of speed, weather conditions, potential hazards and anything else that might affect everyone on the road. What’s more, the key to highway safety is for everyone to anticipate potential problems before they occur. That means always looking ahead.

The HGV Training Centre is very aware of the need for safe driving practices among drivers who operate large, commercial vehicles. That’s why we put so much into it – whether we are preparing a student for the HGV theory test or just finishing practical skills training. It is our goal to ensure every driver that passes through our doors is more than ready when he or she takes to the road.

Our training approach focuses on teaching the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful driver. It’s a fast-paced approach designed to get you on the road as quickly as possible. In some cases, training can be completed in just weeks.

We are a leading provider of commercial driver training with more than 45 facilities around the UK. We would be more than happy to provide the training you need for your HGV, PCV, or trailer licence. New classes are forming all the time, so be sure to get in touch with us right away.
