A few weeks back we reported on an education program designed to give drivers of heavy goods vehicles some understanding of what it’s like to ride a bicycle in the midst of HGV traffic. It is an excellent program that helps drivers gain new perspective so they can better anticipate how cyclists might behave. In that report, we also suggested it would be good to offer training to cyclists and pedestrians as well.

We are happy to report that such training is taking place in small pockets around the UK. One example, in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, involves a program providing LGV training to children. Not training to earn a licence mind you, but training to teach pupils what it is like to drive a big truck in the presence of pedestrians and cyclists.

The training puts kids inside the cab of a lorry so they can experience the size of the vehicles. They are instructed on how lorry drivers use mirrors to see, including being shown real life examples of blind spots LGV drivers experience as a matter of course. Children quickly learn how difficult it is for them to be seen while they are riding bicycles or playing.

The training also exposes children to the engine noise and other difficulties associated with driving such large vehicles. By the time they are done, it is hoped they will more fully understand the driver’s perspective and what each of them can do to ensure their own safety.

Just What’s Needed

This is just the type of training that’s needed to reduce the number of accidents involving HGVs. When everyone is aware of the perspective of the other parties, it makes the need for being extra careful all that much more apparent.

Unfortunately, far too few people really understand what it’s like to be in the cab of a lorry in traffic. Few people understand how hard it is to hear, how much the view is obstructed, and how difficult it is to navigate an LGV through traffic. With more LGV training geared toward cyclists and pedestrians, it seems the incidence of road crashes can be reduced.

At the HGV Training Centre, we do not provide this sort of training to non-drivers. However, we do provide the highest quality LGV training for those who are earning a licence to become commercial drivers. Our courses can prepare you to operate a lorry, coach, bus, tip trailer, horsebox trailer, forklift truck, caravan, and more. We make the process as easy as possible so you can get your license and get on the road.

The HGV Training Centre has more than 45 facilities all over the country. As soon as you are ready to get started, we will help you complete your paperwork, prepare for your theory test, and then put you behind the wheel for your practical skills training. In as little as eight weeks, you can be looking for work through our comprehensive job listings database. Call us today if you are interested in a career as an HGV driver.
